Product Description

The luxuriously designed Sony VAIO VGN-AR620E Digital Studio notebook PC provides a power multimedia computer platform for enhanced entertainment performance. But it can also be admired for its gorgeously appointed design, featuring a black exterior, sleek profile, and interfaces and ports that are easily accessible yet discreetly integrated. It features a 17-inch WUXGA widescreen XBRITE-ECO LCD screen with a 1440 x 900-pixel resolution, and video is powered by the NVidia GeForce 8400M graphics card, with 256 MB of dedicated video memory. Whether you're watching downloaded content in HD or enjoying video captured from your compatible HDV camcorder, this VAIO AR-series notebook lets you output HD content to your compatible big screen HDTV via an HDMI connection (delivering audio and video over a single cable).

This notebook is powered by the 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 processor, which offers a top-of-the-line 800 MHz front-side bus speed and 2 MB L2 cache. The Core 2 Duo processor provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved gaming and multitasking performance, as well as excellent battery management. It also includes Intel's 4965 AGN wireless LAN, which will connect to draft 802.11n routers and offers compatibility with 802.11a/b/g networks as well. Other features include dual 160 GB hard drives (for a 320 GB capacity), 2 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum capacity), multi-format/dual-layer DVD+/-RW drive, Gigabit Ethernet, both PCMCIA and ExpressCard slots, and Memory Stick/SD memory cart slot. The integrated 1.3-megapixel WebCam (and integrated microphone) provides easy video conferencing via VoIP and video IM chats.

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.

The Basics

  • Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 processor has a 2.0 GHz processor speed, super-fast 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and a large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:

    • Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
    • Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
    • Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
    • Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

  • Hard Drive: This system offers a total of 320 GB of hard disk drive space from two 160 GB drives (5400 RPM). These Serial ATA (SATA) hard drives also quicken the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.

  • Memory: The 2 GB of installed RAM (2 x 1024 MB DDR2) will satisfy many users, but this notebook's two DIMM slots have a maximum 4 GB RAM capacity--perfect for high-end video editing and 3-D gaming. It also offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed. To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.

  • DVD/CD Drive: The dual-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 4x for DVD+R DL, 4x for DVD-R DL, 8x for both single layer DVD+R/-R, 8x for single layer DVD+RW, 6x for single layer DVD-RW, 5x for DVD-RAM, and 24x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 86-key keyboard (2.5mm stroke and 19.05mm pitch) and electro-static two-button touchpad.
Screen, Video & Audio
This notebook offers a 17-inch screen with a widescreen 1440 x 900-pixel resolution. The XBRITE-ECO technology delivers brilliant colors and stunning clarity with efficient power usage, and it features an anti-reflective coating to minimize reflection and ensure a beautifully clear image from any viewing angle.

Video is powered by the NVidia GeForce 8400M graphics card, which provides up to 895 MB of available RAM/video memory (with 256 MB dedicated) for unmatched HD video performance on a notebook PC. With support for Microsoft DirectX 10 Shader Model 4.0 and High Dynamic-Range Lighting (HDR), the 8400M lets you rip through all of today's most advanced and cutting-edge games and applications. Experience real-time photo editing, or immerse yourself in the most complex, true-to-life gaming environments. The audio card includes Sony Sound Reality technology with DSD (Direct Stream Digital) support.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated quad-mode Intel Wireless 4965AGN Wi-Fi chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and Wi-Fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). You also get super-fast wired connectivity, with a Gigabit Ethernet port (10/100/1000).

This notebook also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54 card slot (as well as a PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. Here's the full list of connectivity options:

  • 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 HDMI output (for connecting to a compatible HDTV or home theater receiver for uncompressed digital audio and video via a single cable)
  • Analog video output: 1 VGA, 1 S-Video
  • 1 ExpressCard/54 slot (also compatible with ExpressCard/34)
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II, CardBus support)
  • Memory card reader supports Memory Stick/Memory Stick DUO (with MagicGate functionality) and Secure Digital media
  • 1 headphone jack, 1 microphone jack
  • 1 S/PDIF digital audio out (for connecting to a home theater receiver for 5.1-channel surround sound)
  • Integrated 56K modem (V.90)

user comment Sony VAIO VGN AR620E 17 inch Laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7250, 2 GB RAM,320 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium) Does not support Windows 7

Review Date: October 23, 2009
Reviewer: Tyrone Fernando, Texas
The laptop itself has no problem except for the slow performance due to Windows Vista (I have Vista home premium on mine). Therefore, I was waiting for the day when Sony would have the updated drivers and support for this Laptop. However, to my great surprise Sony put up the following message on its website on October 22nd.

"VGNAR605E The hardware configuration of this model does not meet the minimum system requirements needed to run and provide the full experience of the Windows® 7 operating system.
Windows® 7 installation is not recommended and Sony will not be providing Windows® 7 drivers for this model. "

[...]

Other than the above message Sony does not provide any help for users who might want to upgrade.

I can understand some small time product supplier not providing support for one of its recent products, but I didn't expect this from Sony, and also as a fan of Sony products, I am greatly dissapointed. I would not recommend anybody to buy this product because you will be stuck with Windows Vista.

I bought this laptop in January 2008 based on the excellent customer reviews. However, this laptop has been nothing but trouble from the start. I previously had a Toshiba Satellite and switched to Vaio because I had heard so many great things about them... I will be buying another Satellite next time I purchase a laptop. The mother board was replaced in month three of having this machine after frequent contact that began two weeks after receiving it. Sony continued to make excused, give me the run-around, suggest fixes I had already tried, and were generally inept and unhelpful. They were obviously stalling until the 90-day warranty ran out. They sent someone to replace the mother board only after I threatened legal action. Since then, I continue to have problems because it also had a glaring issue with the battery, which they refused to replace. It gets VERY hot, but it wasn't listed as a model that had the 'burning' of people's skin issue, so they didn't care. Granted, I may have been unfortunate enough to just get a lemon, but the issues combined with the inept customer service has led me to the decision that this machine is not worth what I paid for it and thus, no Sony will be worth my time in the future. Toshiba always provided excellent, prompt service and seemed to genuinely care about the quality of their machines.

I purchased this Sony VAIO VGNAR630E laptop recently and have found no problems with it. It runs remarkably fast and has a beautiful display. It is definitely a desktop replacement given it's size, but nonetheless it's still transportable. Overall, so far, it works great and I am happy with my purchase.

Reviewer: Slavomir Miskovec,
Laptop was in a good shape, however there were no CD/DVD drivers attached or OS. This was key because I had problem with Vista since the beginning - error messages and unable to login (and Vista wanted to reinstall).
I had to play with it for a while, download 400 MB of Vista upgrades and 150 MB of Sony upgrades to work... and it is still not working properly. Hard to say if it is fault of seller or Sony...
user comment Sony VAIO VGN AR620E 17 inch Laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7250, 2 GB RAM,320 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium) Hard drive issue

Review Date: April 2, 2008
Reviewer: Bishnu Kunwar,
Well, mine shows only one hard drive; a total of 141GB under my computer even though it shows both hard drives in BIOS. When I called the customer support numerous times, they all said different things but nothing they said resolved the issue. One guy said that the other hard drive is mirrored thats why it is not showing up and suggested me to perform the system recovery. I did that too, but it didn't work. Anybody else has/had the same issue? Or know how to resolve this issue? Other than this hard drive issue, everything is excellent.

Im a SONY fan so this review will be a little bias. I traded my old SONY 15' in for this moblie desktop. The Blu-ray upgrade was very well priced, I believe the same model without it was $200 less.

Pro-
The Xbrite screen is clear and crisp. It makes me feel like im watching a plasma. Na, thats a push.
The factory 2 GB of RAM installed. Its good for gaming right out of the box.
The Blu-ray drive. If youve seen a Blu-ray movie, you already know its beautiful, if not, go buy one. Also, almost 70% of the movie industry is Blu-ray exclusive. HDDVD is going the way of ZIP drives.
Battery Life. I bought a extended battery and ive had it last aboout two and ahalf hours after a full charge. I did not buy the SONY version though, the compatable off factory one works and fits just the same for about $150 less.
The quick keys. You can control music and movies right from the keyboard, no need to click with the mouse. There are two "S" buttons on the keyboard also that you can use to control almost any program or app without having to go to the start menu.
The Motion Camera. Its intergrated on the laptop and its really clear for 1.3 MP. I use it to chat on Yahoo with no issues.

CONS

The mouse buttons. The weirdly placed on the end of the laptop. They feel like they will break off if you click them too hard.
The USB ports. There on the right side and for right handed people using a external mouse, you have to reach a lil to use it.
The Keyboard. Its placed a lil farther back then I like. My hands are small for a guy.
The battery life. This is why I bought the extended battery. The factory battery holds up for about 45-1 hour at the max. This is a beast of a laptop and you cant expect a regular battery to be able to handle a lot of work for a long time anyway.
Weight. Its heavy but its expected for this size.

I just bought my laptop a month ago and ive traveled to New Zealand and back without any major issue so far. Ill update this review later.

***Ive had my VAIO for a little more then a year now and I still believe it was a great buy. Once youve gotten used to the Vista OS, it becomes second nature to operate this machine. My pros and cons have stayed the same, so there is not much to report. This is a good buy.***
user comment Sony VAIO VGN AR620E 17 inch Laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7250, 2 GB RAM,320 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium) A tale of two computers....

I am in love with my Sony Vaio VGN-AR630E. It is fast, provides great graphis, and has just about any feature that you could possibly want it to have. I would definitley reccomend everyone to buy this computer based on its merit, functionality, and enjoyability.

HOWEVER, I have hit a couple of snags with it so far, that I think are more attributable to Windows than to the actual Vaio itself. For example, one of the main reasons why I bought this computer is because of the ability to play Blu-Ray DVD's. Well, low and behold, I am unable to play Blu-Ray DVD's on my computer. When I input the DVD, the software stays in "loading" mode and never plays the movie.

I called Sony Support and while they were very helpful, they didn't have a patch available to fix my problem. SO, I had to pay over $30 for a cd with the patch that is needed, which had to be ordered for me. Given that one of the main reasons why I bought the computer was to play Blu-Ray DVD's, I paid up. Needless to say though, I am not happy about it.

If you want to have a great computer, and don't mind messing with it and/or calling support once or twice, then this is a great computer for you to buy. On the other hand, if you believe that a $2, 000 computer shouldn't create any hassle for you, then you may want to pass this one up.
user comment Sony VAIO VGN AR620E 17 inch Laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7250, 2 GB RAM,320 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium) Excellent Overall Value

I bought this for a combination of work and media player. Excellent screen, quiet and runs much faster than previous laptops. Not much heavier despite the oversize 17" screen.

On the plus side, I was able to create a DVD from a mixture of PC video files in various formats (.avi, .mpg, .wmv) with absolute minimal learning curve.

Some niggles:
- the DVD opens to the side, which means the PC cannot be stored in a stereo rack hooked to an HDTV and used with a remote keyboard.
- the VGA port output is not recognized by the PC port on my Samsung HDTV so I need to diagnose or acquire an HDMI to DVI cable and try that.
- the keyboard is set towards the base of the screen back far from the edge of the PC, which means I rest my hands on the PC - not a very natural position for me. And, the mouse buttons are right on the front edge, far from the keyboard, and prone to being pressed by accident.
- Windows Vista seems to have compatibility issues with some XP software. I am adjusting to some replacement file managers, etc. Aside from being able to create DVD's I have not seen any benefits from Vista - so far I prefer XP and Vista has just been a nuisance - maybe I will learn to love it.
- no manual and it took me a while to find the diagram of the system showing all the ports. Yes, I still like books.
- laptop speaker volume and quality is poor.

Have not tried the Blu-Ray player yet.
